All this and much more was
presented at the International Conference USE-it! which took place from 24th
to 26th April 2002 at the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut in Bonn/Germany. The 120
participants from all over the world were invited to profit in their
occupational fields from new, innovative concepts for the promotion of
spin-offs from universities which have been tested and validated as 'good
practice' schemes by the three EU-projects USINE, SPINNOVA and EMBRYO. The
initials of these three projects coined the slogan of the conference
USE-it!.
USE-it! was organised by the coordinators of the PAXIS-projects USINE,
SPINNOVA and EMBRYO, University of Bonn/EuroConsult (Germany), the Katholieke
Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), the University Miguel Hernández Elche (Spain),
and the University of Twente (The Netherlands).
Topics of the conference were:
- A new concept of
incubation - "pre-incubation" - which is tailor-made for
academics with a business idea and based on two pillars: a customised
training programme and a sale of pilot products prior to the creation of
an own company
- How to set up, manage
and insure a university-associated "pre-incubator"
- New web-based tools for
customised guidance & advice to academic researchers, which assist
them in developing exploitation plans and business plans in a way
"learning-by-doing"
- How to help academic
researchers to set up their own commercialisation plans and
IPR-strategies
- How to create a
favourable framework for the development and growth of innovative firms
- How to set up support
infrastructures for technology-based ventures
- How to support early-stage
entrepreneurs to access international markets
